TESTIMONIALS

Read below if you are interested in our testers' opinions and impressions about Roastino.

Zoli Kis

Founder of Spektrum Coffee Roaster and holistik coffee
Roastino is a total game-changer: it puts a smile on my face every time I roast. It’s smoking hot, super portable, and lets me roast my morning coffee while I boil the water. I can roast pretty much anywhere I want. What other roaster can do that?

Rex Tseng

Founder of Acaia
I’ve had the privilege of testing an early Roastino prototype. The hands-on approach to roasting, which allows for precise manual control and the creation of your own artisanal coffee flavors, has provided me with one of the greatest satisfactions I’ve had in years.

Sascha Matiz

Departement Manager at Olympia Express
As a manufacturer of manual lever machines and as a home-roaster, I did fall in love with the Roastino immediately. The choice of materials and the design are perfect and give it a unique look that will age well. Of course, the roasting experience is as stunning as the looks. Turning the handle of the Roastino and having just the sound of the beans rolling around in the chamber feels meditative! Due to this you will also have no problem noticing the first crack. The Roastino is now my sample roaster of choice to test new beans out before I go in to larger batches.

Tamás Melis

Bean to Cup Manager at Cafe Frei
When I first received the roaster, I wasn’t sure who it was really for. But once I turned on the gas stove and started roasting the coffee, the whole process unexpectedly became enjoyable and meditative. I’ve roasted thousands of kilos of coffee before, but hearing the first crack with this roaster was fascinating due to its unique acoustics. Instead of setting parameters on Cropster, I was adjusting the flame with one hand and turning the drum with the other. It felt like I was relearning roasting and becoming part of the machine. It was a great experience to test this tool, and I was surprised at how consistently I could roast batch after batch.

Barb and Doug Garrott

Founders of orphan espresso
Very satisfying, easy to use little roaster! If we hadn't run out of beans Doug would still be sitting out in the backyard roasting! As TOTAL newbies we had no trouble at all roasting coffee, following your minimal instructions, and that speaks very well for the Roastino!

Gábor Hernyák

Hungarian Brewers Cup Champion - Twenty Eight Roastery
Thank you for the opportunity to try out the little roaster. It was incredibly exciting to bring the roasting process into my kitchen. I was initially worried about manually turning the drum for 8-10 minutes, but I was pleasantly surprised at how engrossing the whole process was. The end result was even more surprising, as I managed to regulate the gas burners well and achieved a great roast on my first try.

Doug Weber

Founder of Weber Workshops
In an industry seemingly full of me-too and consumerism focused products, Gabor et al. has created yet another unique object that puts some of the fun and love back into coffee. The Roastino is a tool that deepens the coffee experience while providing joy to the user in the process.

Gábor Karakai

Fellow leverhead
A very nice product: beautifully designed and easy to use. It fills your Saturday mornings with joy - and your kitchen with the perfume of roasting coffee. I have roasted a total of 1.5 kilos of green coffee with the Roastino, loading 60 grammes at a time. I achieved the richest flavour when I brewed my espresso two days after roasting. I hope the project will materialise, and more people will get a chance to hear coffee crack in their homes!

ORDER MAP

F.A.Q.

The list of compatible heat sources is not limited to what we have shown, but here are some remarks that could help you choose:

  • the heat source should fit under the drum, where the lower and upper bounds are ~60 mm and ~120 mm respectively
  • for better control over the roast, we recommend using an adjustable heat source
  • smaller alcohol burners may limit your batch size to <50g
  • alcohol burner may leave soot on the drum

Optimal batch size roughly speaking is a function of the capabilities of your heat source, drum height setting, and environmental conditions.

After finding an appropriate place and configuration to start, begin your Roastino experience with these easy steps:

  • Preheat the drum to 90°C (194°F) while continuously rotating it, then load 100g of green beans and start a timer.
  • Rotate the drum throughout the roast with approx. 60 rpm and adjust your heat source so that your roast profile (i.e. temp vs. time readings) roughly falls on the following data points: 150°C (302°F) @ 3:00 min, 190°C (374°F) @ 5:00 min, 210°C (410°F) @ 7:00 min.
  • The event of the first crack (1C) should happen sometime after 7:00 and the roast level could be determined by the time between 1C and the DROP (i.e. ejecting the beans from the drum for cooling). A rough guide for roast levels is: 1C+0:45-1:00 min - light (filter) roast, 1C+1:30-1:45 min - medium (espresso) roast.
  • In the event of DROP eject the beans to a thick metal tray or colander and try to cool it as fast as possible with agitation and airflow.
  • After cooling, you may remove the leftover chaff by gently blowing it off.
